Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Horror/Supernatural

This batch features sanity-eating monsters, Natasha Alterici's return to drawing comics, the 30th anniversary of Evil Ernie, some young Lycan adventures, and some psychedelic horror courtesy of Silver Sprocket.

HEART EYES #1

(W) Dennis Hopeless (A/CA) Victor Ibanez

Sanity-eating monsters ended humanity. The unlucky few who survived now hide in the cracks of a broken world. And yet somehow, beneath the graveyard that used to be San Antonio, Rico met Lupe, the girl of his dreams. But how did she get here? And why is she smiling? No one survives out in the street. No one smiles where the monsters lurk.

Why this caught my eye:

I like Ibanez's style and the previews he's been putting up on social media just look like fun.

HAUNTED BELOVED ONESHOT

(W) Natasha Alterici (A) Natasha Alterici

'Til death do us part...? Following a fatal accident, a newly incorporeal lover makes an earnest attempt to reconnect with their widow. But will their paranormal meddling be for better or for worse?

Why this caught my eye:

I love Alterici's Heathen so I'm happy to see them return to drawing comics after dealing with developing a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome. I am late in pushing this as it should already be out as of this writing, but I always want to spotlight Alterici whenever I can.

EVIL ERNIE #1 30TH ANN FACSIMILE ED

(W) Brian Pulido (A) Steven Hughes (CA) Eric Mache

Back in print for the first time in decades, just in time to celebrate the 30th anniversary! The holy grail and origin of the Chaos! universe can finally be added to your collection with this new facimile edition. In 1991, horror mastermind Brian Pulido and the maestro artist Steven Hughes kicked off what would become an innovative and expansive world of characters.

Originally published by Eternity Comics, Dynamite is proud to re-present one of the biggest key issues in comics history! Meet Ernest Fairchild, a disaffected and abused teen being held in the Clearview Mental Institution. Dr. Leonard Price has tried experimental treatments like dream therapy, wherein Ernest met the mysterious and captivating Lady Death, which only prodded him further into homicidal urges. Mary Young visits the institute and observes his violence firsthand, convincing her maybe they can cure him forever with neurotech... Turning him into the maniacal Evil Ernie! This facsimile edition presents the original comic in all its glory, including advertisements and more.

Why this caught my eye:

This is an odd recommendation for me because I don't generally consider Evil Ernie books to be good, but this sparks a certain nostalgia for cheap 90's horror comics. It certainly is a creature of its time and it's a bit worth it just for the time capsule aspect. At least I say that before actually rereading any.....

CHANGELING GN VOL 01

(W) Tina Lugo (A) Tina Lugo

Long ago, when gods and demons still roamed the earth… a human touched the heart of a beast. Their offspring would be known as Lycans: half-human, half-wolf. Over time, the Lycans split into four clans, kept in balance by the Heketi, a group of elite warriors hand-picked to serve as defenders and peacekeepers of their lands.

Luth, a young Lycan, enters the grueling trial to become a Heketi for the first time. With her fighting skills, sharp wits, and the help of an oath-bound will-o-wisp, she may just survive the traps and challenges that await her in the forest. However, she may not be able to outrun her destiny as the Dark Star… and even she does not know what consequences that destiny will bring.

Why this caught my eye:

Loves me some Silver Sprocket and I like the look of what we're seeing so far in the previews.

BE KIND MY NEIGHBOR GN

(W) Yugo Limbo (A/CA) Yugo Limbo

Murder. Love. Cults. Puppets!

It’s 1973, the town of Baths, cozy middle-of-nowhere American heartland. Traveling musician Wegg rolls in, content to busk for a beat and be on his merry way once more. That is, until he meets Mr. Neighbor, the disarmingly sweet man made of cloth who offers him company and a place to stay. As the two grow closer, they click together just right, each harmonizing with the other’s most secret self. Yet their growing romance is haunted by uncertainty and mystery…

There’s the town itself, plagued by repeated, ritualistic murders by the elusive Baths Heartbreaker. Then there’s Neighbor, whose cheerful demeanor never falters, but who disappears like clockwork every month. And Wegg, who lives as though he’s on borrowed time—what exactly is he afraid will catch up to him?

A twisting graphic novel of love and deceit, all threaded together with lush psychedelia, folk horror, and a heaping helping of mirth. Turns out, sometimes the best way to conquer your past is to find a future.

Why this caught my eye:

Again, I just like pushing Silver Sprocket. But also, this is giving me some 90's Slave Labor Graphics vibes and they even have an animated trailer to boot.

That's it for this batch, we'll hit up some sci-fi on the next round!
