Upcoming Comics Spotlight: Batman. Just Batman.

Considering Batman is sort of his own genre I didn't feel like overcrowding the DC spotlight with too much Batfamily material, so here's a dedicated focus for ya.

BATMAN ONE DARK KNIGHT #1

Written by JOCK

Art and cover by JOCK

$6.99 US | 48 PAGES | 1 of 3

PRESTIGE PLUS | 8 ½" x 10 7/8"

ON SALE 12/7/21

From high above the sweltering summer streets of Gotham, Batman planned to escort the GCPD as the dangerous metahuman super-villain known as E.M.P. was transferred from a holding cell to his permanent home at Blackgate Prison. E.M.P.'s electrical powers posed a threat, but the situation was in hand—until it wasn't. Now every light in Gotham is out, the police are in disarray, and a broken, bleeding Batman must fight his way to Blackgate, block by block, dragging E.M.P. behind him. But the dark corners of Gotham hold many surprises…and E.M.P. has many more shocks to deliver before the night is through!

One of the most iconic Batman artists of the 21st century, the incomparable Jock (The Batman Who Laughs, Batman: The Black Mirror), has focused all his storytelling powers on the tale of one very, very dark night in Gotham City. It's always darkest before the dawn—if it ever comes…

Why this caught my eye:

It's always nice to just get a short and focused Bat story, and I'm not sure if I've ever read a Jock story that he scripted himself so sounds like it's worth checking out.

ROBIN & BATMAN #1

Written by JEFF LEMIRE

Art and cover by DUSTIN NGUYEN

$5.99 US | 40 PAGES | 1 of 3 | PRESTIGE

ON SALE 11/9/21

The legendary story of Batman and Robin has reached nearly mythic proportions: the crime-fighting Dynamic Duo, always one step ahead of the criminals they pursue and never meeting a case too big. This isn't that story. This is the story of a young Dick Grayson, newly orphaned, struggling to find his way in a strange, difficult, dark new world…This is the story of Robin and Batman.

The bestselling creative team behind the Eisner-winning Descender, Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen, reunite in Gotham City to tell the story of a remarkable young man learning to navigate an incredible new world!

Why this caught my eye:

Descender fans should definitely check this out, plus I loved Nguyen's Lil Gotham material so it's just great to see more Bat family stuff from him.

THE JOKER 2021 ANNUAL #1

Written by JAMES TYNION IV

and MATTHEW ROSENBERG

Art and cover by FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA

$5.99 US | 48 PAGES

ON SALE 11/30/21

His first year of being GCPD police commissioner was an intense challenge for James Gordon. He battled corruption in the ranks, his marriage was in shambles, and the vigilante Batman was clearly welcoming new recruits with the appearance of Batgirl. And The Joker picked his moment to unleash hell!

Why this caught my eye:

Definitely here for that Francavilla artwork, plus while I like the main cover I do have to say I am a Dan Hipp fan and really like the variant.

BATGIRLS #1

Written by BECKY CLOONAN

and MICHAEL W. CONRAD

Art and cover by JORGE CORONA

$3.99 US | 32 pages | Variant $4.99 US (Card stock)

ON SALE 12/14/21

Um, hello—you didn't actually think we'd keep you waiting this entire year without giving you the Batgirls series we've all been wanting for forever, right? No way, we love you too much—just like Batgirls Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown, who are only able to navigate the dark, gritty, and oftentimes scary city of Gotham by leaning on the bright light that is their best-friendship. Mentored by Oracle, the Batgirls move to the other side of town where Barbara Gordon can keep a better eye on them while the hacker Seer is still invading their lives. Steph may be too rash sometimes, and Cass doesn't speak much—but what they lack in similarities they make up for with their mutual respect and love for each other…and what makes them stronger together as Batgirls! And they may be good at kicking ass, but they are just trying their best to be normal teenagers—who'll borrow the keys to a muscle car that belonged to a bad guy and perhaps give it a joyride around town without a driver's license, then race to get back home to Oracle by curfew…!

Splashing the pages with bright colors against a dark backdrop of Gotham, Batgirls is the pizza slumber party of the year you don't want to miss!

Why this caught my eye:

It's great to see these characters back with their original costumes, a decade was far too long a time to wait.

BATMAN #118

Written by JOSHUA WILLIAMSON

Art and cover by JORGE MOLINA

$4.99 US | 40 pages

ON SALE 12/7/21

New creative team! Start of a new story arc as Batman leaves Gotham!

"Abyss" part one! As Gotham celebrates surviving Fear State, Batman retreats alone into the darkness. But when he learns of a mystery involving Batman Inc., it forces the Caped Crusader to leave Gotham for a brand-new adventure! Thrills, chills, and international intrigue await!

The Dark Knight begins a new story with superstar artist Jorge Molina and new writer Joshua Williamson!

Why this caught my eye:

Looks like a good new jumping on point, plus Molina's artwork is looking pretty sharp in the early previews. Also there's a good looking variant for the Jock fans, plus the McFarlane tribute cover is nicely done and there's even silver and gold foil versions for those needing some pure 90's vibes shot directly into their veins.

That's it for this batch, we'll take a look at some comedy next time around.
